Indian EV Charger Count Depends on Who You Ask

Ask “how many EV charging stations does India have?” and you’ll get wildly different answers depending on who you ask.

The government says 27,737. A private network says 100,000+ and counting. Open Google Maps in Delhi NCR or Bengaluru and you’ll see enough pins to believe the second number. So which is it?

Both. They’re just counting different things.

The government figure — data tabled in Parliament by the Ministry of Heavy Industries — tracks a narrow, legally defined category: licensed, unattended, commercially operated Public Charging Stations. Almost all of it — roughly 27,400 stations — sits at petrol pumps, installed by the three big oil marketing companies (IOCL, BPCL, HPCL) since 2021, partly under FAME-II subsidy and partly self-funded.

The private figures for EV Charger count something much broader. Some apps run peer-to-peer marketplaces where individuals list their home or office chargers for others to rent. By one platform’s own past disclosure, the majority of its “points” were private, not public.

Others are software layers that integrate with thousands of home chargers used by fleet and gig-economy drivers. And automaker apps often re-package an oil company’s existing network under a new logo, making “new” infrastructure that isn’t actually new.

None of these numbers are lying. They’re answering different questions:

• How many licensed public stations exist? → ~27,700
• How many charging points of any kind — home, office, fleet, public — are listed on some app? → 100,000+

The real problem isn’t that the numbers disagree. It’s that there’s no single, trusted source that tells an ordinary driver which category the charger near them actually falls into — is it truly public, or will it turn out to be behind a society gate?

That gap — between what’s counted and what’s actually usable — is where most of the frustration with India’s charging network really lives. It’s a data problem before it’s an infrastructure problem.
